Additional Information on the
Pekin 1st Committee Functions
Revised April 2007

History and Purpose of Committee

The Pekin 1st Committee was formed during the late 1980's by a group of concerned business leaders who desired to promote the use of Pekin area businesses before going out of the area to seek goods and services.  Slogans like "Shop in Pekin First", "Buy in Pekin First" and "Own in Pekin First" were used in different image campaigns.  Because of this, the committee was called the Pekin 1st Committee.
During the middle 1990's, the Pekin 1st Committee joined the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce as a formal committee under the leadership and guidance of the Chamber.  Presently, the main function of the Pekin 1st Committee is the planning and coordination of the bi-monthly "Puttin' On Pekin" breakfast.

Puttin' On Pekin Breakfast
Purpose, Timing, Typical Agenda, and Definition of Awards

Purpose of Breakfast
The purpose of the Puttin' On Pekin breakfast meeting is to highlight new activities that are of general interest to the community.  Special efforts are made to have attendees learn about new businesses, services, or events making an impact on the city and surrounding area.  In this attempt to emphasize what is going right within the community, the name "Puttin' On Pekin" was coined.

Recognition / Awards

Early and Late Arrival Prize
In an attempt to say thank you to the person who arrived first on the morning of the breakfast, a prize is given to that individual.  The prize is usually something nice with the theme of an event that is coming in the near future (the individual is "early" for that event).  The late arrival prize is given in an effort to have fun and say thank you to that individual who, even though they arrived last, still was able to attend the breakfast.  The prize is usually something of a humorous nature with the theme of an event that has already past (the individual is "late" for that event).

50 / 25 / 25 Drawing
Drawing tickets are sold just like a 50/50 drawing as people come in to attend the breakfast.  Rather than a straight 50/50 drawing, the 50/25/25 drawing has as its goal to raise money for a not-for-profit agency of the winner's choice.  At the time of the drawing, 50% of the proceeds go to the Chamber of Commerce, 25% of the proceeds go to the individual winner, and 25% of the proceeds will go to the winner's charity of choice at the time of the drawing.

Blue Ribbon "Sunshine" Volunteer Award
The intent of this award is to recognize an individual, group of individuals, or organization that volunteers their time in the community "behind the scenes" to make things happen.  The award winner will receive a framed certificate commemorating this recognition.  Nominations are received through committee members or recommendations to the Chamber office.  The recipient of the Blue Ribbon Sunshine Award does not need to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Blue Ribbon "Lovin' Our Town" Homeowner or Business Improvement Award
The intent of this award is to recognize individuals or businesses that have taken the time to significantly upgrade a property.  Typical award winners have included:  Homeowners who have taken a run-down property and brought it up to modern standards; Business owners who have significantly upgraded their property, either outside or inside; or, Business owners who have purchased an old property and upgraded it to meet modern standards. The award winner will receive a framed certificate commemorating this recognition.  Nominations are received through committee members or recommendations to the Chamber office.  The recipient of the Blue Ribbon "Lovin' Our Town" Award does not need to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

"Spotlight on Business" Award
The "Spotlight on Business" award has 3 criteria for considering award winners:  A business in the community that is a member of the Chamber of Commerce; Noteworthy contributions to the community; and Noteworthy levels of customer service.  The award winner will receive 2 items commemorating this recognition: A framed certificate to keep and A "traveling trophy" that they will keep in their place of business for 2 months until the next winner is announced.  Nominations are received through committee members or recommendations to the Chamber office.  The recipient of the "Spotlight on Business" Award needs to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Not-for-Profit Speaker
An opportunity is given at each "Puttin' On Pekin" breakfast for a not-for-profit agency to take up to 5 minutes to discuss the mission and function of their organization.  This is an organized section of the breakfast and must be approved by the committee in advance.  Nominations are received through committee members or recommendations to the Chamber office.
