I have been using the IPADs as a warm up with my guided reading groups. With my lower groups we have used the refrigerator magnet app to work on word family. Students would manipulate beginning sounds to change words in several different word families. I have also used the Fish for words app with my on level groups to practice hearing and identifying sounds in words. For my high group we have used the pop words app to find and spell words, it is a lot like playing boggle. I have found that my students are very excited to join me for guided reading when they know they get a 5 minute warm up with the IPADs. We have also read some stories using the story app, they love that too.
In Guided Reading I used Build A Word (in the Language Arts tab) with my lowest reading group. They struggle with listening and breaking apart the sounds in words they aren't familiar with so this activity was great practice for them. The activity had them practicing "tapping out the sounds" they heard in each of the words. It was a great way for each of them to visualize and find each letter to create the entire word. My students loved it! I now plan to continue to incorporate them mroe frequently into other Daily 5 areas such as, Word Work and Reading to Self.
