Long Range Plan 2004-2009
Mission Statement:
Pekin Public Library serves as the community's information center and gathering
place by offering a welcoming environment and supporting the development of
informed and enlightened citizens.
Goals and Objectives:
Commons
The Library Board of Trustees will provide residents with a modern library facility
that is welcoming and user-friendly for the purposes of coming together to teach,
learn and discuss matters of importance to them.
- The Board and staff
will work with the architect to develop a plan in 2004 to remodel and update
the entire facility in phases over the next five to ten years, and documents
will be created for public presentation.

- The Board and staff
will develop a funding strategy in 2004 to complement the phased in remodeling
plan for the facility.
Families in Pekin will have access to quality programs and information resources
that encourage them to interact and network with others.
- The library will plan,
publicize and host at least 24 family programs each year.
- The library will plan,
publicize and host at least 12 discussion groups each year.
Lifelong Learning
The residents of Pekin will have the resources and facilities they need to succeed
in their pursuit of personal growth and development.
- The library will update
all public computers on a 5-year rotational basis to provide access to current
technology and information.
- The library will increase
the number of public access computers by 10 percent over the next 5 years.
- Twenty percent of the
library’s adult and children’s non-fiction collection will be
reviewed for its currency, accuracy and relevancy annually.
Children and adults will have opportunities to develop a love of reading and
discovery that will contribute to their future success, and to productive and
satisfying lives.
- The library will provide
well-planned and publicized summer reading programs for all ages and will
increase participation by 10 percent over the next 5 years.
- The library will seek
out two cooperative partnerships with area educational institutions each year
to enhance opportunities for reading and discovery.
Current Topics and Titles
All Pekin residents will have access to current and popular materials and programs
for reading, viewing and listening that will enhance their leisure time, stimulate
thought and expand their knowledge of contemporary culture and issues.
- By fall 2004, the library
will organize a rapid response team to identify in-demand children’s
and adult materials and a process for meeting patron demand within 10 business
days of a request.
- The library will increase
expenditures for print and non-print materials to 15% of the total budget
over the next 5 years, with an emphasis on popular demand materials.
- At least 20 displays
per year will highlight and promote materials to enhance leisure, stimulate
thought and expand knowledge of contemporary culture and issues.
- By offering a variety
of programs that enhance patron leisure time and stimulate thought, attendance
at adult programs will increase by 5% annually.
