Mystery of the Mummy
Angie Appell and Kellie Herren

Pictures of our Week

This week in camp we explored the world of Ancient Egypt.  We delved into a magical world where pyramids, mummies, ancient writings (heiroglyphics), and mythological gods and goddesses reigned supreme.
On Monday, we focuses on the mythology of Ancient Egypt.  We learned about the gods/godddesses, the Nile River, and explored a general overview of the Ancient Egyptian culture.
On Tuesday, we made pyramids, worked with our groups on ideas for a time capsule, and decided what we would take with us into the afterlife.  We researched pyramids by reading about them in books and on the Internet.
On Wednesday, we explored the world of Ancient Egyptioan writing called hieroglyphics.  We learned the hieroglyphic alphabet, created our own cartouches, then wrote secret message on papyrus paper.  We went onto the Internet and had our sentences translated into heiroglyphs for us.  We also make Ankh necklaces.  The Ankh is the symbol for life.
On Thursday, we discovered mummies.  We read The Egyptian Cinderella, and recreated fairy tales from an Egyptian point of view.  We recorded these tales in our mummy journals.  We also learning about King Tut, and the curse associated with the opening of his tomb.
On Friday, we finalized work on our Rosetta Stones.  We wrote secret messages, along with the translations, onto the stones.  We completed an archaeological dig on Ancient Egyptian artifacts.  We had to carefully piece together the mystery.  Our groups also created travel brochures, inviting others to travel back with us into the world of the Ancient Egyptians.  Finally, we create PowerPoint presentations as a culmination to our Egyptian unit, and presented these to the class.
It was a great week, and in the end we were all awarded honorary Egyptologist certificates for all the work we had done, and knowledge we had gained.
