Washington Intermediate School

Award-winning author, Susan Kirby, visited Washington School Monday, January 21,as part of our Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebration. She presented two performances for the Washington students. Mrs. Kirby, the author of 37 novels, had the Washington students portray parts of her novel, Hattie's Story. As a school-wide project the Washington students read her novel and discussed it in the classroom. Hattie's Story is a novel about the work on the Underground Railroad. She said she patterned one of the characters after Harriet Tubman. Washington students from Mrs. McCarty's class also read poetry at the Martin Luther King breakfast.
