GROUND RULES

WHAT IS IT?

Ground rules are the rules that a team or class should set together. If a group can offer ideas of behavioral norms (what's acceptable, what should always, or never, happen in the group), they feel ownership of the process. This type of open and reflective sharing is the first step toward creating a safe and open environment.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Ground Rules

Everyone Participates
Take Turns
When working in a large group, one person speaks at a time
Listen to each other
Help each other out
Never make fun of anyone
Treat others as you want to be treated

WHEN IS IT USED?

Use ground rules before any group effort, such as field trips, class meetings, science labs, etc.

HOW IS IT MADE?

  1. As a team, consider ways to get everyone's ideas (brainstorming: refer to guide rules for brainstorming).
  2. As a team, determine how you can take a large list and turn it into ground rules (no more than 6 or 7).
