| Each
K-3 and 4-6 building have at least one or more Literacy
Leaders. The Literacy Leader’s job is to provide
additional support to students who have been identified
as needing additional academic help. Students are identified
as needing assistance through assessments, input from
classroom teachers, and possibly through a referral from
the ARC committee. Multiple forms of assessments are used
in this identification process. Also, the Literacy Leader
might perform testing to gather some additional, specialized
information. Once areas have been targeted for improvement,
the Literacy Leader would work with the students on a
one-to-one basis or in a small group. The Literacy Leader,
along with the classroom teachers, would continue to monitor
students’ progress through data collection and analysis.
Adjustments would be made in instruction as needed.
Along
with instructing students, Literacy Leaders participate
in modeling activities for classroom teachers while
also providing or suggesting additional resources. For
example, a Literacy Leader might instruct a whole class
thus modeling an instructional strategy that could be
used or built upon by the classroom teacher. As a person
with specialized knowledge in the area of literacy,
the Literacy Leader is an active participant in the
school improvement process that sometimes includes providing
professional development activities to other staff members
in the building. |
