Archived Stories of PEC Participants and Winners

March 2007

Heather Knight Mrs. Knight's literacy students have been hard at work. The students were asked to read a biography on a famous person they were interested in. Then they did a book report on that person and eventually created a timeline on the computer. The students were asked to research specific events and did an impressive job.
   
Mary Jo Sarff* Mrs. Sarff's intern, Miss Prentice, has began a pen-pal relationship with the Hopi tribe in Arizona. The students are learning the proper way to draft letters as well as learning new information about the Hopi American Indians. The students will be corresponding with the Hopi fourth grade class until the end of the year.
   
Morgan Belcher** First Grade students from Miss Belcher’s literacy group read the non-fiction book “Extreme Animals”. The students worked with a partner to research their favorite animal from the book. The students used Yahooligans.com to find out more animal fun facts! After their research and hard work, the students created power points.
   
Lori McCoy Mrs. McCoy's class recently finished a unit on Egypt. The students made pyramids, their own languages, flags, completed internet activities, and used the word processor to make a test. The students that receive an "A" on their test will have the opportunity to wrap Mrs. McCoy up like a mummy. They are so excited!

February 2007

Brandi Bailey* Mrs. Bailey's first graders are learning why it is important to be a good friend. After filling out a planner on the important characteristics it takes to be a good friend we turned our ideas into a power point. The students had so much fun working in partners to create their friendship powerpoint books.
   
Christine Gardner In Ms. Gardner's Class, students used Microsoft Publisher for the first time to create their own book covers. The covers will be used for their Young Author's Books. The students typed their own titles, information facts, and inserted clip art.
   
Robyn Peffer Mrs. Peffer's first graders are learning about penguins. They really enjoyed the internet site of penguin jigsaw puzzles. This is a favorite indoor recess activity. Also, they liked the site that had a sound clip of penguins "talking".
   
Tanya Swearingen**
Ms. Swearingen's class is writing stories based on the pictures and captions from the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg. The class will publish the stories by using my new scanner to incorporate pictures from the book and Microsoft Word to type the text.

January 2007

Nancy Thompson** Mrs. Thompson's students are using plays and reader's theater scripts to increase fluency and reading with expression. Students performed "Hattie and the Fox" for the kindergarten students. To learn more about foxes, students used several internet sites.
   
Carrie Anderson Mrs. Anderson's kindergarten and 1st grade groups at Starke use power point slide shows to learn their sight words. The students then put the sight words into sentences and insert a new slide into the show each time it is used.
   
Tanya Swearingen* The students in Mrs. Swearingen's class researched an endangered animal and created power points to share with the class. The students not only learned about different animals endangered throughout the world, but how to use Microsoft power point as well.
   
Jeannie Hudson Mrs. Hudson's First Graders and Mrs. Roger's Kindergarten children and their parents enjoyed a cold winter's afternoon building gingerbread houses together at school just before the holidays.
   
Christine Gardner The students in Ms. Gardner’s 2nd grade class are each writing a biography on a different president for their Young Authors story. The students used Yahooligans to find kid friendly sites they could read to do their research. They are looking for information about their birth, childhood, presidency, and when the passed away.

December 2006

Nancy Thompson Students in Mrs. Thompson's class are learning about reindeer. As an introduction, the class used an internet site. The site had many fun facts about reindeers. When the students were finished reading up on reindeers, students then could take a quiz to see how much they learned.
   
Kristy Estes The students in Mrs. Estes' class had a celebration called a Sharing Feast for their parents and teachers. The students wanted to thank all the people in their lives who support them. Parents were treated to a full Thanksgiving meal and skits produced by students. A fun time was had by all!
   
Victoria Timko* Ms. Timko's 8th grade science classes have been performing experiments using the scientific method. They just finished one experiment exploring how different variables make balloon rockets travel at different speeds. Students then produce reports using MS Word and MS Excel to create data tables and graphs.
   
Heather Knight Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Stoner's Literacy Labs have grouped together to create some wonderful plays. The main goal for this unit was to increase students' fluency and promote reading with expression. The students used various websites from the Internet to research Johnny Appleseed and do a mini webquest.
   
Lori McCoy**

Mrs. McCoy’s class recently completed an eight week DARE program. The students enjoyed learning how to say no to drugs. As a part of this program, all students were required to write an essay stating how they would stay drug free. All of the students utilized computers to write their papers using Microsoft Word.


November 2006

Morgan Belcher* Students in Miss Belcher's first grade literacy group learned how to use PowerPoint. Three groups of students read books and created a Who, What When, Where and Why PowerPoint presentation related to their book. The next day, the students presented their books and power point to the rest of the literacy group!
   
Jeannine Hudson Students in Mrs. Hudson's First Grade at Jefferson have been learning about Bats and Spiders in October. They've been reading lots of books, creating Venn diagrams comparing bats and birds, and creating fact stories. Thanks to United Streaming many of the facts they've learned through books have come to life!
   
Michael Ritchason** Mr. Ritchason's class recently read the story Dream Wolf. To learn more about wolves the students utilized an Internet site (http://www.wolf.org/wolves/
learn/justkids/kids_wolf_families.asp
) to find out facts and then used the information to create booklets about the animals.

Students in Mrs. Thompson's first grade classroom are learning about bats. We used this site www.nwf.org/batguide/batguide.pdf to get info and it had some good activities to do with students. We also used www.batcon.org/home/default.asp. It had a video clip and an adopt-a-bat program along with great pictures and info.

October 2006

Kami Spatzek Students in Mrs. Spatzek's class have just completed their first five sentence paragraph about being "thumb-body" special.  They got the idea for the paragraph from the book called "Thumbprint Critters."  After editing then publishing their paragraph on Microsoft Word, their thumbs got busy as they decorated their final copy.
   
Jason Fowler Students in Mr. Fowler's 7B Math class have been learning to add fractions and convert their answers to decimals with a Fantasy Football Mathematics unit. Each student started the season by picking a dream team and has been able to cheer them on at home as the NFL season progresses.  Several BJHS faculty/staff are playing too.
   
Diedre Wicker The staffs of Broadmoor’s newspaper use a variety of technology to produce the year's first issue of the paper. Students are using Microsoft Publisher to create pages for the school paper; taking digital pictures and creating collage pages; and using the scanner.
   
Ruth Whaley** Students in Mrs. Whaley's class love Earobics!  Earobics is a software program that focuses on phonemic awareness and phonics skills. It is a reading intervention that is research-based.  My students use the software daily during reading/language arts centers.
   
Lori McCoy* My class has been working on reading biographies for their monthly A.R. goal. Instead of the old fashion “book reports”, my students are making PowerPoint’s to share their information.  The students are able to use their own creativity and personal touches using the technology at Wilson School. 

September 2006

Andi Cashman* Mrs. Cashman's first grade students have been looking high and low for creative examples of color. They have been using a digital camera to take pictures for our classroom book of color names. We will also make a PowerPoint of the pictures to share with other classes.
   
Amy Lydic The students in Miss Lydic's kindergarten class have been reviewing colors and learning how to spell them. They recently took a walk around the school to look for colors. Each pair of students was assigned one color to look for. A digital picture was taken. The pictures were used to create a class powerpoint about colors.
   
Dierdre Wicker** Students in Mrs. Wicker's class practiced sentence structure to improve variety and impact in their writing. The Smart Board transformed this traditional lesson into an energetic and interactive lesson. The students were interested, attentive, and eager to participate!
   
Kami Spatzek Flip flop flee! Students from Mrs. Spatzek’s Class have been busy reviewing letters and sounds with the help of the story “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” First they read the story then they played a powerpoint letter game. They also did art activities, practiced sequencing, made a class book, and even made their own edible tree.
