April, 2002

Team 7J had two very beautiful days at Great Oaks Camping Ground. While there, the students participated in the Outdoor Education program, directed by Broadmoor teacher, Larry VonBehren. Students were educated in the areas of canoeing, archery, woodburning, constructing bird houses, making tee-shirts, making home-made ice cream, nature hikes, team building activities, and navigating through the trees on a series of ropes and harnesses. The students were treated to pizza from Mr. Whitton, owner of Jimbo's Jumbo Thursday evening. They were also excited to hear Mrs. Marge Bjorge, and Ms. Cookie Bannon. A special thank-you to all of the teachers, parents, students, and especially Mr. VonBehren for their time and effort in making this an extraordinary program! Everyone had an awesome time!

8H math students completed a similar figures project. The purpose of the project was to find the height of three objects using height and shadow of a basketball hoop. The students worked in partners to set up proportions and solve the problem.
Broadmoor was honored to have Commander Scott Altman as our guest on Tuesday, April 23. Commander Altman had just finished his third trip into space to do some work on the Hubble telescope. He shared a video of his space trip, along with a PowerPoint of very interesting slides. The students and teachers were able to ask questions after his presentation. Commander Altman presented Broadmoor with a space patch that he took on his last mission and a collage of pictures. It will be on display permanently in our Learning Center. Commander Altman is a native of Pekin 108 with both of his parents having been Broadmoor teachers at one time.

The students ended their afternoon before spring break with a "staff versus 8th graders" volleyball competition. Students who wanted to participate put their names in an envelope and Mr. Fairchild randomly selected three boys and three girls for each game. The "friendly competition" went into three games with lots of fun and action. Teachers were able to keep their championship title from last year.
