April, 2003

Team 7J had two wonderful days in the woods at Great Oaks campground. The students, under the direction of Mr. VonBehren, were able to experience Outdoor Education on April 24th and 25th. The students were able to experience archery, tee-shirt making, canoeing, hiking, building a birdhouse, the ropes (the ropes are awesome!), ice-creme making, and the initiatives. Mr. Harold Masters roasted a hog for the event (very tasty!) and Mrs. Cookie Bannon lent her wonderful stories and music to the evening hours. Smore's by the fire and a rousing game of dice ended the first evening. Hayrack rides and a little bit of rain the next day made for a wonderful experience that our 7th graders will never forget.

Mrs. Donaldson's class has been participating in Special Olympics this school year with students in Mrs. Hancock's and Mrs. Gray's classes. On April 27, three students participated in the Special Olympics Spring Games. Three of Broadmoor's very own won some amazing medals. Congratulations, girls!

Jenny - 50 meter dash - silver and the tennis ball throw - bronze
Kaelie - 50 meter dash - gold and the tennis ball throw - silver
Holly - 50 meter dash - bronze and the tennis ball throw - gold and a state qualifier

Teachers played the students in some rousing games of volleyball to end the week before spring break. Eleven teachers formed a team and took turns beating the students, one team at a time throughout the entire tournament. Sorry to say, but even the girls volleyball team didn't stand a chance. Maybe next year, eh students?!

Students on Team 7B finished up their study of the Revolutionary War by playing "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." The game was prepared by student teachers, Ms. Wagenbach and Ms. Gentile and the students had a blast trying to answer all of the questions correctly.
Students in Mrs. Nelson's 8th grade Social Studies class have been studying the Vietnam War. They completed their study of the war by listening to Mr. Gary Nevius, a Vietnam War Veteran. Mr. Nevius was stationed in Vietnam for the entire year of 1969 and shared slides, an audio tape of an actual battle and many fascinating stories with the students. The students (and teachers!) really learned a lot about the war from his first hand account.
Team 7B students had lots of fun recently in math class. Under the direction of Ms. Gentile and Mr. Fogal the students created scenes using geometric shapes. The students were required to use at least six different 3-D shapes in their creations. The results are amazing and are on display in the learning center.
Mrs. Nevius and Team 8H participated in a Poetry Slam at Pekin High School. The students had to try out, practice their poems, and then took a field trip to Mrs. Renner and Mrs. Crosby's Global Literacy class.
