February, 2002 |
One of Broadmoor's own, Devin, was recently invited to attend a conference and breakfast in Springfield as Sentaor George Shadid's guest. Devin is President of the Torch Club at the Boys Club here in Pekin. Students from around the state gathered in Springfield. Congratulations to Devin for his leadership skills!
Broadmoor hosted the district spelling bee on Friday, Feb. 22. All of the school representatives did a fabulous job. Congratulations goes out to Edison School and their winning team of Toby and Josh! The two boys will represent Pekin #108 at the county spelling bee.
Connection students on Team 7J staged a talk show with characters from the book Holes. They wrote the scripts and then acted out the scene including having TV commercials. Students had a number of creative situations that they portrayed, and many budding actors and actresses were allowed to display their talents.
Student Council members assisted teachers in some spring cleaning. On our early dismissal day, teachers got to clean for 45 minutes before lunch. Students helped teachers dust, vacuum, and clean desks and bookcases. Broadmoor is looking pretty spiffy!
Broadmoor Junior High would like to congratulate Aubrey for receiving the Pekin Schools Achievement Award for February. The award was presented to Aubrey by Mrs. Benjamin. Pekin Hospital and Lite Rock 107 select students from Pekin on a monthly basis that exhibit great behaviors inside the school and in our community. Congratulations Whitney!
BACK THERE, a play by Rod Serling, (a typical TWILIGHT ZONE) was performed by 8H language arts class on Feb. 13th. The play's main character, played by Steven Halstead, traveled back in time trying to save President Lincoln from his assassination. Sue Farrell, Whitney Farrell's mom, helped with scenery, props, and special effects. Students from other classes made up the audience to help us celebrate Presidents' Day.
Broadmoor was fortunate to be able to see Mr. and Mrs. Abe Lincoln on Friday, February 8th. The husband and wife team visited the students and gave a fascinating look at the life of the Lincolns.
Team 7B hosted a dance Friday night, February 8th. They held a "pie in the eye" contest among teachers. Students donated money to seeing their favorite teachers get splatted with a creme pie. Mr. Noonen, Mr. Fogal, and Mr. Heisel had the honors. Lots of students attended the dance with proceeds going to the Outdoor Education program.
Mrs. Roiger's 4th hour math students on Team 8H are making bridges for the American Society of Civil Engineers contest in Peoria on February 17th. Students are working in teams of 4 to build a bridge out of index cards using only glue or tape to hold them together. The bridges are judged on esthetics, meeting specifications, load held/weight of bridge ratio, and a report. The top two groups from the class will go on to the contest in Peoria. The students are now in the process of seeing how much weight their bridges can hold.
Broadmoor Staff and the Pekin Preschool Staff were served lunch on February 5th by Central Office. Perry, Chuck, John and Matt came to Broadmoor and served the faculty a soup and salad luncheon. Why, you might ask? Both of these groups of people had the largest percent increase of the entire district for donations towards United Way. Way to go staff! The lunch was wonderful, but the service was even better! Thanks, guys!
