May, 2002

The 2002 Girl's Track team finished off their season with a game of Ultimate Frisbee after school on the 23rd. Having lost to last years, 8th grade team, this years 8th graders were determined to win. They did. The 8th graders beat the 7th graders by 4 points. When the game was over, our new school record holders took the opportunity to change the record board to reflect their efforts. Charlie broke the 7th Grade 400M Dash record with a time of 1:05.57. Nicole broke the 7th Grade Shot Put record with a throw of 27' 6". Carrie set a new standard in the 8th Grade Shot Put with her throw of 29' 8 ¼". Charlie and Nicole also qualified for the State Track Meet held on May 17th and 18th in their events. Charlie placed 14th
and Nicole placed 17th each in a field of over 40 participants. Congratulations to all of this year's Girl's track team on a fine season!
Students in Mr. Jans Industrial Tech classes are having lots of fun designing and testing their catapults. Students had to bring in scrap lumber and other devices from home and create a catapult that would launch a tennis ball. Students were asked to design their units based on distance and accuracy.
Mr. Heisel and Team 8H science students experimented with the laws of physics this morning.

Broadmoor students and staff enjoyed a performance by the Pekin Junior High Band and Jazz Bands. Mr. Perrilles and the Bands both put on an excellent performance. Mr. Heisel was a guest conductor and did a great job with a marching tune. The band students and conductors put in an endless amount of time practicing and performing throughout the years. We really enjoyed listening to the results of those hours today. Thank you!
The Pekin Junior High Band and Jazz Bands performed on the evening of May 16th at Edison. Mr. Perrilles led the band through some wonderful numbers and then started the audience toe tapping with the Jazz Band. Both were excellent and were enjoyed by all.
Congratulations to Laura and John for being selected as the Elks Award Winners. Both 8th graders were honored on May 14th at the Elks Club.

Team 7B hosted visitors from the Illinois river and other local aquatic ecosystems. Rob "The Fishman" Hilsabeck returned to Broadmoor. Mr. Hilsabeck is a fisheries biologist with The Illinois Department of Natural Resources. This year Mr. Hilsabeck brought a number of amphibians, reptiles and fish caught in local waters. Mr. Noonen's second hour teamed up with Mr. Trowbridge, Mrs Piper, and the third graders from Dirksen for an encore presentation. The hit of both programs were the TURTLES AND FROGS!

Students from Mrs. Chenoweth's 5th hour class helped the Dirksen students celebrate Cinco de Mayo Day. They answered math problems that came from a pinata, made tissue paper flowers, made bean shakers, and ate tortillas and cheese. Dirksen students are lots of fun!
Broadmoor hosted a webcam conference on Tuesday, April 30th. The presenter was Rick Wormeli and the topic was "Brain Research and the Middle School Classroom." We were also lucky enough to have teachers from Wilson, Washington, and Dirksen join us. It was a great session with lots of great tips to take back to the classroom. Thanks to all who took time after school to participate.
