May, 2004

The track teams and choir were all honored at the spring awards ceremony. Congratulations to all students who participated in these programs.

Mrs. Brown's 8th grade language class wrote their own script for the novel, "Deathwatch." They included a part for Mr. Fogal, Madec the villain, and he graciously agreed to play the part, even though it was way out of character for him. :)

The YWCA honored Jolene for being an "Outstanding" young lady and student. Jolene was invited to a luncheon with her parents and one teacher. Great job, Jolene!

Mrs. Jensen's class celebrated the end of the school year with a class trip. The boys went shopping at Super Walmart for some new summer clothes. The girls were treated to a new hairstyle at the beauty salon. They all then met up for lunch at Applebees. What a fun day!

Team 7B were very fortunate to have a group of Civil War re-enactors visit them at Broadmoor. The "soldiers," under the direction of Mr. Mark Scamp, shared their vast knowledge of the Civil War with the students and answered questions for them.

Mrs. Cihla's language arts classes are doing a free choice project. Projects range from powerpoints to newspapers, plays, commercials, and statues. The students will present their projects the last week of school.

Team 8H celebrated the end of the year with a cookout and afternoon of games. The students and parent chaperones were treated to lunch on the grill and an afternoon of fun and sunshine. Congratulations to the team for a year of hard work!

The Pekin Junior High Band gave their last performance for Broadmoor and Dirksen students. The band and jazz bands performed some awesome tunes and we appreciate all of the hard work that went in to their year. A big thank-you to Mr. Perriles, Mrs. Janssen, the parents and all of the students for their dedication to music.

Baby Link is finally here! Bill and Kelly Link had a baby girl on May 5. Mom and baby are at home now and doing great. Big brother and sister couldn't be more excited. Mrs. Link is the Learning Center teacher at Broadmoor.

Students were treated to a concert by "Angel" on Thursday, May 6. Angel was on her "Save the Music VH1 School Tour." Students who had good behavior were able to see the concert. Students who received a yellow ticket as part of the PBIS program, were in a session pertaining to good behavior and being responsible for their actions.

Congratulations to the recipients of the Elks Club Award. Joelle and Tyler were honored at a banquet on May 4. The students were chosen for this award for their academics and extracurricular participation.

Congratulations to the students who were honored by the Rotary Club. These students were the top 10% of their graduating class. They were invited to a dinner on May 3 with their parents at Pekin High School.

The students of Team 7B, under the direction of Mr. VonBehren and Mrs. Roberts, were able to experience their Outdoor Education on April 29 and 30. The students were able to experience archery, wood-burning, tee-shirt making, canoeing, hiking, building a birdhouse, the ropes (the ropes are awesome!), ice-creme making, and the initiatives. Mr. Harold Masters roasted a hog for the event (very tasty!) and Mrs. Cookie Bannon lent her wonderful stories and music to the evening hours. Smore's by the fire and a rousing game of dice ended the first evening. Hayrack rides and a little bit of sunshine the next day made for a wonderful experience that our 7th graders will never forget. The rain held off Friday until the students were loaded on the buses and headed back to Pekin. A HUGE thank-you to all of the parents and teachers for making both 7th grade trips so memorable.
