November, 2002

Student Led Conferences were held at Broadmoor on Thursday and Friday, November 21 and 22. Each student worked very hard preparing for their conference. They gathered samples of their work from each class and reflected on their progress since the beginning of the school year. We were glad to see lots of parents during conferences! more pics
Congratulations to Kailey, Samantha, and Renea for winning the Book Fair poster contest. The three girls received first and second place in the contest and were awarded free books from the book fair. Sponge Bob and "Just Read It" were the winning themes. Thanks to all who participated in the contest.
Mr. Fogal and Mrs. Melloy teamed together to create "Turkey Books" with their students on Team 7B. The students studied the 3rd grade math standards and then using their math and language skills, wrote math story problems. The students then wrote a book based on the Thanksgiving theme complete with lots of great clipart. Mr. Weigardt's third graders at C.B. Smith were the lucky recipients of the books. The 7th graders traveled to Smith, teamed with a 3rd grader, and helped them answer the story problems. What a neat day for everyone!
Mrs. Melloy and Mrs. Stump have had their 7th grade Language students in stations preparing for student-led-conferences. Mrs. Stump is working with the students on their letter writing and word processing skills. Mrs. Melloy is sharing her talent and love for scrapbooking with the students. The students are working on a very creative front page to their conference folder. Both teachers and students are having lots of fun learning together!

A group of ISU Interns have been visiting Broadmoor this week. The college students have been getting lots of junior high experience observing and interacting in the different classrooms. The students and faculty have enjoyed having them around...come back soon!
Mrs. Wicker and the newspaper staff have been very busy. They have already published their first issue of "BJHS Today" and are hard at work on the next publication. Their goal is to publish four issues this year. Students and staff alike really enjoyed reading the school newspaper. Stay tuned for the next edition, which will first go out in hard copy, then will be on our school webpage.
Mrs. Nelson and her class were treated to a special lunch that they prepared with Ms. Nakatsuka. Our visiting Japanese teacher instructed the students in the preparation of Japanese dumplings, green tea and miso soup. Arisa was also presented with her very own Broadmoor Bruins letter jacket. Broadmoor was very happy to have Arisa visit and we learned so much from her as a teacher and a friend.
In 1951, Harold Lewis was called to serve with the armed forces fighting in Korea. Harold, at the time, was a senior at Pekin High School. Harold went overseas, fought in the Korean War, and never finished high school. After all this time, Harold was awarded his high school certificate from Pekin High School. Harold currently is employed by Pekin 108 as a district custodian. Congratulations, Harold for serving our country and for being a role model to our students!
Haley and her Dad, Tom, brought a guest to school. Their Salvador Water Monitor was a much talked about pet and teachers and students were finally able to confirm its uniqueness. And boy will it get big!! Thanks for bringing in your pet lizard, Haley!
The Pekin Junior High Band was a big hit on Halloween. The band students dressed up in costume and played for the students at Schramm School. Both sets of students had a great time enjoying the musical parade!
Connection students in 8S were honored with a calligraphy demonstration by Ms. Nakatsuka. Students used Japanese paint brushes, ink and paper to write their names, Pekin, dragon, U.S.A. and many other words. The experience was fun and educational. Our Japanese visitor has been a wonderful teacher!
