the students of team 8S on
Thursday, October 25. The Reverend, who spent the first 20
years
of his life in Lebanon and has
made many additional visits, spoke to the students about
culture and religion in the
Middle East. He talked about marriage procedures, the criminal
justice system, the different
types of governments, food, and the role of the family. Students
were given about 20 minutes to
ask questions. Father Elia also brought a copy of the Quran,
worry beads, and pictures for
the students to see. It was a very imformational presentation.
Thank you, Reverend Elia.

Broadmoor students take action! "The Patriot Dance" was the conclusion to almost a month of collecting and donating funds to send to the American Red Cross. The dance was held on Friday, October 12th. Almost $600 was raised from the dance alone. Students paid $2 to get into the dance and could buy raffle tickets (2 for a dollar) for a chance to win the prizes that were donated by Pekin area businesses. Some of the prizes that were raffled: a portable CD player, brunch at a Peoria area restaurant, a purse worth $140, skating parties for nine people, bowling parties for ten people, food coupons from every area restaurant, beanie babies, paint ball parties, gift baskets filled with patriotic items, movie passes, video rentals, a large cheese tray, hair care products, and many others. The generosity of area businesses was overwhelming. Pastor Robert Brite and his congregation donated a large sum of money to help the Red Cross. The four teams were in a competition to see which team could earn the most money: 7B raised $590; 7J raised $700; 8H raised $1206; 8S raised $1291 for a grand total including the dance of $3787.Way to go Broadmoor!! A HUGE thank-you to all of the businesses that made donations. Your generosity was truly appreciated.
Team 7J visited Arthur, Illinois on Friday, October 12. The students first had lunch in an Amish home. Mrs. Schrock and Mrs. Jess prepared a home-cooked seven course meal including chicken, ham, noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade bread, and desserts. The group then traveled to Rockome Gardens where a tour guide got on the bus and gave the students a guided tour through the Amish community. Lots of great information was shared with the students on the Amish and their unique culture. The group then visited Rockome Gardens and then headed for home.
Larry VonBehren was recently named as Pekin Walmart's "Teacher of the Year." Mr. VonBehren's students nominated him and wrote a persuasive essay on why he should receive this honor. Walmart then notified Mr. VonBehren that he had been selected. Walmart chooses only one "Teacher of the Year" each year. Mr. VonBehren received a cash award of $500 dollars, which he graciously donated to the Outdoor Education fund. He also received a Walmart vest and was lucky enough to participate in the Walmart "wiggle." Sources say that he can wiggle with the best of them! Congratulations to Mr. VonBehren...Broadmoor is proud of you!
