October, 2002
Broadmoor was very honored to have our three Japanese guests here for the entire day. The teachers are visiting Illinois to learn more about our schools and our teaching methodologies. The three teachers taught Broadmoor students today about the language, the Japanese alphabet, sports in Japan, and cultural dances. The students were most interested when a "contest" for Japanese money and stickers was held (the students had to guess words that were written in Japanese). We most enjoyed learning about the culture and the country--thank you Tasu, Taka and Guin!
Superintendent Perry Soldwedel and Assistant Superintendent Chuck Bowen presented the 2002 District Report Card information at the October 21st Board of Education meeting. By state rules and regulations, individual school report card information is posted to the school's web site. It has also been made available to the Pekin Daily Times and the Peoria Journal Star. A copy of the school report card can be printed from the web site. Upon request, a parent may call the principal's office at each school and a copy of the school card will be sent home.
Broadmoor is pleased to have Arisa Nakatsuka visiting with us for three weeks. Nakatsuka Sensei (Teacher) is a 7th, 8th, and 9th grade Language Arts teacher in Japan and is part of the 2002 Japanese Young Teachers for Illinois program. She visited schools in Chicago for three weeks, is in Central Illinois at Broadmoor for three weeks, and then will travel to Washington D.C. and San Francisco for three weeks to sight see. Arisa has brought with her a wealth of knowledge that she has been sharing with students and teachers alike. She has done lessons with the children on the Japanese alphabet and orgami as well as observations in many different classrooms. She also had the great opportunity to visit Dirksen, Edison and Washington schools to see different classroom settings. Mrs. Pam Nelson is Arisa's host at Broadmoor and has done a fantastic job arranging her schedule and being her mentor teacher while here. We will miss our Japanese friend when she leaves for the east coast on November 2.
Broadmoor's Student Council were busy on Saturday. The group and their sponsor, Mrs. Nelson, raked leaves for three different families here in Pekin. The community project is just one of the many that the group has planned for the year.Lots of smiles and great fall weather accompanied the junior high students during their raking efforts!

Mr. Heisel was the guest speaker for Mrs. Nevius' 8H Language Arts classes. The classes just finished reading the short story, "A Running Brook of Horror." The story stars a King Cobra and its owner, Grace Wiley. Although Mr. Heisel does not own a cobra, he does have lots of other interesting snakes. He brought the snakes and his vast knowledge of them for the students to experience and enjoy.
The students on Team 8H have been busy with Jason 14. Not another sequel...the JASON Project. The JASON team will explore the terrestrial and marine ecosystems that extend from California's coast to the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary to learn how such systems affect life on our planet. Under the direction of Mr. Noonen, students have been working on the project in all of their different classes.
Mrs. Roeder and Broadmoor music students have been studying the Baroque period. They completed their study by creating a powerpoint about that period in history.
