BILT Minutes

November 1, 2000

Members present: Jeff Nelson, Stacey Melloy, Pam Nelson, Julie Maras, Bill Heisel, Jayne Richards, Jill Roepenack, Kelly Link, Aimee Moran, Holly Brown, Greg Fairchild, Lavonne Dawson, and Pam Scoles.

Fundraiser Money: Broadmoor Junior High School will have approximately $12,000+ from the fundraiser. Lavonne Dawson discussed using some of the money to purchase new tables for students in wheelchairs. Currently, we do not have sufficient tables for those in wheelchairs. Lavonne estimated the cost for four tables (one for each discipline) to be $400. Stacey Melloy asked if this item should be brought to the budget committee. Discussion also led to seeing if Schramm or Wilson has any of these types of tables. Elaine Stein also needs to be contacted for some financial support.

Role of BILT: Jeff discussed his research and said he had no luck in making any true contacts with other agencies and how they utilize their leadership teams. Jeff discussed the "Koality Kids" program and passed out a rubric describing leadership decisions in school buildings. Jeff also made the point that we need to be preparing for a Quality Assurance visit next year. Greg found a website which also highlighted roles of schools and their leadership teams. The URL is www.aisr.brown.edu/challenge/cj/vzn1table.html.

Discipline Schedule Day: Teams reported that they like the discipline schedule so far. It has been very productive; however, exploratory teachers have to adjust the most due to the fact that they may only see students on Monday and Friday of that particular week. Jill Roepenack suggested that all teachers need to have a special lesson just for these days. Overall, most teachers seem to like the planning opportunity with their disciplines. Pam Scoles suggested a theme for the day. BILT also suggested that the discipline schedule not necessarily fall on the third Wednesday of each month. There may be times where the third Wednesday is not a good time to run the schedule. The office will set the date and the teams can decide a theme if they would like.

Learning Center: Kelly talked with Brian Abeling about the prices for new computers for an additional computer lab in the future. The top of the line (Omni Tech) would cost around $1000. Kelly said that support is one of the biggest issues. The computers we decide to purchase should be ones that support is familiar with. The discourse lab is to be disassembled and has the capability of about fifteen computers with the internet. Discussion was held about what to do with the discourse lab in the meantime. Some ideas included: using it as a conference room, a room to show movies, read plays, etc…

Pekin Project Success: Julie Maras brought a brochure about Pekin Project Success and asked that the brochures be available for parents at the conferences. Julie also talked about having a special program related to diversity in the month of January. The program would help all students to observe Martin Luther King Day and the importance of diversity. Julie said she would try contacting some people specially trained for diversity training.

The next BILT meeting will be Wednesday, December 6, 2000 from 3 – 4 pm.
