Columbus Day at Broadmoor J.H.
Team 7B
Students experimented with making a "round" world by manipulating a blank sheet of paper. They were given one "practice," then were given a blue sheet of construction paper. They had to draw in the 7 great circles and sketch in the continents. They then cut and shaped their world into a circle. Lots of discussion ensued on the thoughts and feelings of people living in the 1400's.
Team 7J
  • Discussions on:
*why Columbus sailed, who for, why, the number of voyages
*the Vikings and their role in the new world and that they were here before Columbus
  • The students then watched a CNN Newsroom segment about the Vikings (identity, culture, location, fact that they were not warlike).
  • Discussion was concluded with another CNN segment on Iceland (geography and climate).
Team 8H
Students read about Columbus' voyages and compared the dangers and unknowns his crew faced with modern adventures and expeditions. Students discussed the pros and cons of the risk versus reward of adventure seeking.
