DISTRICT 108 STRATEGIC PLANNING MISSION STATEMENT

Pekin Public Schools is a visionary, innovative elementary district committed to preparing responsible, productive, life-long learners by fostering active partnerships among our learning community.

BEFORE SCHOOL PROCEDURE

Students should:

Broadmoor Junior High is pleased to provide your child with a photo identification card that will identify your child as a student at Broadmoor. This ID card will be worn by every student and staff member during the school day and will support our academic program by providing a debit card for purchasing lunches as well as a library card to check out books in the learning resource center. Students who lose their ID card will be issued a temporary card for the day they report their loss to the office. A nominal replacement charge will be assessed if the photo ID has to be reissued.

ADMITTANCE TO BUILDING BEFORE SCHOOL

You are not to arrive at the school before 7:45 am. If you enter the building before 7:45 am you must report to the office with a note stating the reason for your early admission to school. If you have a conference with a teacher, that teacher must issue you a pass so that you may be admitted to their classroom before school. You are to enter the building from the rear blacktop area and not the front doors. Boys will report to the commons, sit down and talk quietly. Girls will report to the foyer area. Upon dismissal from your designated area you will have 4 minutes to go to your locker, obtain admit slips and use the restroom.

BUS RULES/PRIVILEGES

Eligibility for bus transportation will be determined by the school district. Students may only ride the bus to which they have been assigned. Students are under the jurisdiction of the school while at the bus stop and riding the bus. The bus driver is in complete charge at all times; she/he is responsible for the safety of the students and is required to report any infraction of the rules to the school authorities. Bus riding is a privilege, which may be revoked.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENTEEISM

Students are required by Illinois State Law to be regular in attendance. Regular pupil attendance in school is essential to each student’s continuous intellectual growth. School officials will make contact with any parent whose student develops a pattern of unexcused absences. If the absences persist, the matter will be turned over to legal authorities for prosecution that may include a $25.00 per day fine for each unexcused absence.

Only the following reasons are acceptable for pupil absence:

Please call Broadmoor, 477-4731, at anytime if your student is to be absent. It is important that we keep in good communication. School personnel will contact parents if a call is not received by 9:00 a.m.

EARLY DISMISSALS

Students may not leave school during the day except upon written request of a parent or guardian. All students requiring an early dismissal must obtain an approved permit from the attendance clerk before school starts. Show the early dismissal slip to the teacher of the class you will be leaving. All students must present their early dismissal permit upon check out at the office before leaving the building. Any student returning from an early dismissal must stop at the office to sign in.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL

Students will report to the attendance clerk upon arrival at school following an absence the previous day. A student may return at any other time of the day by reporting to the school’s office. Students are required to bring a written note from a parent or guardian stating the specific reason for the absence. Students will be issued an admit slip by the school clerk which must be shown to each teacher. Students returning to school without a written excuse for their absence will receive an unexcused absence. If a written note is not brought in, the matter will be turned over to legal authorities for prosecution that may include a $25.00 per day fine for each unexcused absence.

TARDY TO SCHOOL

Students who arrive late to school are considered tardy. Any student reporting late to school must report directly to the office. The only acceptable excuses for tardiness are medical/dental appointments or an emergency situation. Students arriving late on a bus are not considered tardy. The responsibility for being on time rests with each student. When a student has been tardy for unexcused reasons, that student will be given a central detention. The student will be given a central detention for each additional unexcused tardy. If tardiness continues, parents will be called in for a conference to solve the problem.

TARDY TO CLASS

All students are expected to be on time to class. Office personnel will not issue a tardy pass between classes unless the principals or secretary detains the student. Students who are detained at the end of class by a teacher should obtain a pass from that instructor to present to the next class teacher.

CENTRAL DETENTION

Classroom teachers may assign and detain students up to 45 minutes after school in their classrooms for unacceptable behavior. It is our policy to normally grant 24-hour notice unless previous arrangements have been mad

e with the student and his/her parents. Transportation from school is the responsibility of the student and his/her parents. Central Detentions can be assigned for 45 minutes by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or other staff members for the following: inappropriate language, inappropriate behavior, insubordination, tardy to school, skipping room detentions, or vandalism. The Principal can add other offenses. Any student who skips a central detention will serve an in school suspension the next day they are in attendance and will also be required to make up that central detention that same day.

NOTE: If a student gets kicked out of Central Detention, he/she WILL NOT be readmitted to school until the student and parent meet with the building administrator. The student will serve an ISS after that conference. Any student who has an ISS or OSS will be excluded from attending any after school activities for an entire month.

EXCESSIVE DETENTIONS

Any student who accumulates four central detentions during a grading period will lose the privilege to attend any after school activities for an entire month. In addition, that student may also receive an in-school suspension. This applies to all students.

GOOD NEIGHBORS

Broadmoor students are expected to be good neighbors when walking to and from school. Students are to use the sidewalks and should avoid private property. Students are not to cut through the woods behind the school or trespass on the nursing home property.

MAKE-UP WORK

Parents or guardians must request make-up work by calling the Broadmoor office. The request is to be made before 9:00 a.m. and homework may be picked up between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Make-up work may be requested after an absence of 3 days. When absent for a period of less than three days, students are encouraged to get assignments from a friend and to check with the teachers upon returning to school. Students will have as many days to make up the work, as they have been absent. Teachers expect all assigned and requested make-up work to be completed and turned in for credit. Teachers are not required to accept make-up assignments for unexcused absences.

LUNCH PROCEDURES

The District Hot Lunch Program provides nutritious lunches every school day. Choices include pizza, hamburgers, salad bar, and a hot entree item daily. Ala Carte items such as milk, french-fries, cookies, etc. are also available. Students will be required to use their photo ID when purchasing their lunches.

Broadmoor students are expected to be well behaved in the lunchroom as well as in the classroom. Upon entering the Commons, students are expected to be seated at their assigned tables. Students are to raise their hands and receive permission from cafeteria supervisors before leaving their seats. Students may talk quietly in the cafeteria. Students are to be respectful to the cafeteria supervisors and to each other. Students are to display good manners at all times. When finished, students are to properly dispose of all trash and uneaten food and clean up the area around their table. Food is allowed only in the cafeteria. Sack lunches are to be marked with the student’s name and kept in their locker until lunch dismissal. Books should not be brought to the lunchroom during the lunch hour.

The final decision concerning this will rest with school administrators. The following items will be considered inappropriate but not limited to:

be suggestive or revealing, especially skirts, shorts, including biker shorts and spandex materials;

If you are unsure of the appropriate length of shorts or skirts, here is how it is determined: place both arms extended straight down along the sides of your body, if you are able to touch skin with your fingertips then your clothing is too short. Parents will be contacted if the school administrator feels that a student’s clothing violates the above rules or if his/her appearance causes a disturbance, a distraction, or a safety hazard.
