Two streams of events converge as the impetus for this study. The more obvious is the financial situation of the district, which requires us all to carefully consider what the district does and at what expense in time, people, and money. After several years, and $5M in reductions, it is well past time for easy decisions in this area. Now we must carefully clarify and prioritize the District's services to students, faculty, and community. Unless something changes the District's financial outlook, hard, bleak choices are ahead. We professionals have an ethical responsibility to make sure those choices are informed by the actual needs of students and the community.
A less obvious impetus is the need every excellent organization has for reflecting upon its mission and how it accomplishes it. In Superintendent White's metaphor, our schoolhouse has solid structure, and it has served our needs very well. But times and conditions change our needs, and now it is time to check whether or not the roof needs work or the rooms need to be reconfigured for different uses. In this light, a reasonable outcome might be the same number of employees whose work has been reconfigured to better serve our students.
The District 108 culture requires us to come together as a team to make sure we serve both of the reasons for this study. The superintendent and board must have our best analysis to make their difficult decisions.
