Pekin PDS

The Pekin PDS Program, in partnership with Illinois State University, is a year long experience that allows a student teacher to see what a full school year is like.

I spent my first phase, from August until mid October in a fourth grade classroom.  I took part in the beginning of the year district and school meetings, setting up the classroom with my mentor teacher and open house for parents and students.  I started out observing and helping out with this class twice a week, while taking my methods classes on opposite days.  I also was able to get some experience in a junior high setting, as part of my middle school endorsement.

Phase two was spent in a first grade class, for the next nine weeks. I was able to experience a primary building and again work with a mentor teacher and the students twice a week, while finishing my methods classes.

Phase 3 and 4, which began in January began my official student teaching, with my fourth grade class from Phase 1.  I already felt at ease as I came back in Januray, since I knew the children and my mentor teacher.  I was able to quickly take over the six content areas and all teacher responsibilities.

I feel very privileged to have taken part in this program, due to the amount of time I spent in the classroom.  I have learned many different techniques, in and out of the classroom and I have seen what works best for me.  I am now excited and confident to take on my own classroom!
