District 108                        Illinois State University

The Professional Development School, which is commonly referred to as PDS, is a partnership between a school district and the university, which combines teacher education and school reform to improve student learning.

Pekin Public Schools, District 108, is nationally recognized for its use of classroom technology.  The National School Board Association selected this district as the "Elementary Technology School District of the Year".

The partnership between Illinois State University and District 108 focuses upon:

  • Problem-based learning
  • Technology-rich learning environments
  • Collaborative instructional strategies

Phase I

  • Orientate to the beginning of the year classroom activities and professional activities, such as district retreats and building retreats
  • Begin methods course work
  • Experience a K-3, 4-6, 7-8

Phase II

  • Place in new grade level
  • Continue methods instruction
  • Experience a middle school setting
  • Observe specialists in a variety of areas

Phase III & IV

  • Begin in-depth student teaching
  • Attend professional meetings with mentor
  • Produce a quality professional portfolio
  • Prepare for job fairs, job searches, and interviews
