I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and learn. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential. There are three areas that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment: the teacher acting as a guide, allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and showing lots of enthusiasm for learning.
When the teacher's role is to guide (providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information) the the students' search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers to their own questions. I am helping them to become problem-solvers and independent learners. Hands-on activities and authentic situational learning helps the students make connections with what they are learning and the real world.
Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. It is important to develop a curriculum around a students interests.
I set the mood in the classroom. If I am down so will my students. I am very enthusiastic about the learning process. I love being there every day. My students can see that I truly care for them and am excited about them learning and me guiding them. The mood is contagious.
For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. I will always strive to be the best teacher that I can be.
