The purpose of the Pekin Professional Development School is to create an exemplary learning environment that embraces innovation and the integration of best practices for children, interns, and faculties in a technologically oriented society.
I had the opportunity to participate in the Pekin Professional Development School. I knew that this would be much more intense than the typical senior year. Being a mom, my time is already limited. Now that the school year is complete, I am so very happy that I made the decision to be a part of the PDS.
I was totally immersed in Pekin 108 school district from the beginning of the school year through to the last week. I felt very much a part of my assigned school- C.B. Smith School. The staff was so welcoming. I would not have experienced this had I not taken a part in this unique program. There are four phases throughout the course of the school year that I experienced.
Phase I- The interns are placed in a classroom with a mentor teacher during the first 8 weeks of the semester. I was placed in a third grade classroom. I was paired with the greatest mentor- Tonya Calvert. We fit like a glove! I helped my mentor set up the classroom. I participated in the building retreats. I also spent the entire first week in the classroom with my new students. This is also when I had my methods courses...15 hours worth of classes! It was a very busy semester but I enjoyed every minute of it.
Phase II- The interns are assigned to a different mentor and grade level. I was assigned to grade five at Wilson School. My mentor at this grade level was Lisa McKenzie. I was very intimidated by older students, butI loved fifth grade! I feel that experiencing a different grade level was very beneficial.
Phase III- The interns are in the Phase I classroom full time. I planned and instructed the students under the guidance of my mentor, Tonya Calvert.
Phase IV- The interns are continuing the student teaching experience. I enjoyed my time with my third graders. They will always be considered my "first class". I will remember the moments that I spent with them ...always.
