My name is Laura Rhoney and I am from Wheaton, IL, which is a western suburb of Chicago. I am currently a senior Elementary Education major at Illinois State University.
I am the only daughter of two supportive parents, Brian and Carol Rhoney. My father is a self-employed CPA, and my mother was a medical technologist, but currently helps my father run his business. I do have a younger brother, Derek, who is currently a junior at Glenbard South High School.
In my spare time, I love going to Chicago Cubs games, going to movies, reading, and taking pictures. Due to the fact that my maternal immedidate family live nearby, I love spending time with my friends and family. My friends and family have been extremely important during my career at Illinois State University. They have supported me, and helped me get myself "back up," when times have been rough.
Before attending Illinois State University, I had numerous experiences that aided in my passion for teaching. From 1999-2002, I was a volunteer cheerleading coach for the Glen Ellyn Park District. Also, during my senior year of high school I participated in an internship at Briar Glen Elementary School in a fourth grade classroom. This program was offered at my high school, as a tool in choosing a career for college.
I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since second grade, and never stopped since. I went to Arbor View Elementary School, which is a K-5 building. I had many teachers impact my life while I attended Arbor View. My experiences there were an inspiration and motivation for me, in reaching my goal to become a teacher.
For the last stretch of my time at Illinois State University, I chose to participate in a Professional Development School (PDS). This is a year-long student teaching alternative. I feel this program has immersed me so much in a school district, that my passion for teaching has only grown stronger.
