Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education is founded on my strong belief that all students are fully capable of learning.  Consequently, I feel it is my job as an educator to create an environment in which all students can become successful learners.  In order to create a successful learning environment for all, I believe the student-teacher relationships need to be very well developed.  Students need to trust and respect teachers, and it is equally important for teachers to trust and respect every student.

It is my philosophy that students need to be taught as individuals, rather than as a whole class.  Every child learns differently and I believe every child deserves to be taught in a way that benefits his or her learning style.  I feel it is very important for a teacher to determine what motivates each student in order to help every student achieve to his or her highest ability.

I strongly feel education should be predominantly student-centered rather than teacher-centered.  In my classroom, the role of the teacher will be to guide the students in the direction of the knowledge they are actively seeking.  I, as the teacher, will still maintain control of the room, but it is my firm opinion that students need to have an active role in their education.

Cooperative learning is also a key component of my philosophy.  I feel that students learn better if they are allowed to collaborate with their peers.  I want my students to learn how to work well with others so that they can develop into functioning members of their class, school and community.  In order for the cooperative learning environment to be successful, I believe it is extremely important for students to support their peers.  My classroom will be a place where all students feel free to express their opinions and are not afraid to make mistakes.  Students will help each other learn, which will ultimately create a very successful learning environment.

I view learning as a lifelong process for both my students and myself.  I want my students to be able to see my genuine love for learning, so that they will be inspired to continuously seek new knowledge in their own life.  I passionately believe that one’s education is never complete and I intend to continue my education in order to benefit my students and myself.  My students are an integral part of my personal growth.  Not only will I teach them, but I will continue to learn from them as well.
