The Pekin PDS has given me a teaching experience that I feel I could not have received anywhere else. I have learned so much about what it takes to be a teacher in front of a class. Although I learned much from my methods classes during my time at Illinois State University, actually being in the classroom is what I feel has prepared me the most for my future career. I now feel comfortable collaborating with fellow colleagues, taking on professional responsibilities, as well as teaching children the necessary content.
When beginning the school year, I had no idea what I was getting myself into with a class of eighteen second graders; I soon learned. I found that it takes much enthusiasm, patience, discipline, and time to reach success. It is also an entirely different experience being in a sixth grade classroom compared to a second grade classroom. The students attitudes and mannerisms towards the teachers are contrasting. I was so glad to have that experience because I truly found where my heart is in teaching. I am excited to take on my own third grade class next fall and gain success from my students, as well as from myself!
