I sit in disbelief as I think back on just how far I have come this year! Thinking back to Phase I of the Professional Development Program, I remember feeling incredibly nervous.
As soon as I set foot into the third grade classroom, I wanted the students to like me. It took a while for me to learn the routine and procedures, and how to be firm, yet kind to the students. I learned that all children need rules, structure and routine.
I enjoyed the experience I had during Phase I, and did not want to leave! I began my Phase II placement after Christmas and was equally nervous to begin time in a sixth grade classroom. Throughout the eight weeks I spent with the students, I learned that even older students want to feel important! I learned a great deal about myself during this time, and was thankful to have a different experience. Through it all though, I decided to go back to the third grade class to complete my Phases III and IV.
I feel like I really became a teacher over Phases III and IV. This was the time that I was in charge of everything my mentor teacher was at the beginning of the year. I learned how to effectively plan and instruct the class. I really "came into my own" in the way I was able to "take over the class." I truly cared about the students and constantly reflected on myself so that I could give them the best possible learning experience.
Over the course of time I have spent at ISU, I feel I have gained a wealth of unforgettable experiences and knowledge. Not only do I feel prepared to get out and teach in my own classroom, but I now know effectively how to do it. I am thrilled when I look back and think of all the accomplishments I have made while at ISU. I have grown in so many ways over the past few years educationally. I have been so lucky to have learned so much. I am grateful to have been a part of the PDS program through ISU. I do not think I would feel as well prepared for the “real-world” had I not gotten the experience. Hopefully my future students will benefit from my incredible experiences as well.
