2002-2003 DILT Action Research ISSUES

  • Improve attendance rates for students and employees for the 2002-2003 and make recommendations by May, 2003 to sustain the improvement in future school years.

Truancy is becoming more and more of a problem, especially in upper grades. This team will examine attendance data over the last two years to determine patterns/trends of truant students and chronic truant students. They will examine the effectiveness of strategies that have been employed to address student attendance. They will recommend strategies that might improve the truant problem. The team will also address the effectiveness of city and county programs that are in place to assist schools with truant problems. They will recommend strategies that might make those programs and services more effective. Related to staff attendance, the team will examine group attendance data over the past three years to determine if staff attendance is an area in need of further study. They will examine staff absenteeism data related to sick, personal leave, professional leave status.

  • Make application for state and national awards to validate and celebrate the quality of the district.

The State Board of Education offers opportunity for schools and districts to make application for two awards. The school award is for student performance results that exceed state expectations related to student demographic information. The state then recommends schools for a National Blue Ribbon School award through the United States Department of Education. The district award is related to the Baldrige quality assurance process. It provides recognition at three levels for progress toward achieving organizational excellence. This team will review the application expectations and process to determine if a school or schools or the district as a whole should make application. The team will facilitate the application process.
