For the past five weeks
team 8A has been working very hard on a project called "World in Motion
II," which is what students call "the toy project." All students
worked in groups of three or four, which were randomly selected by teachers.
The objective was to build a toy to sell to a toy retailer. The toy
was to be built keeping a six to ten year old girl's interest in mind.
At the beginning of the
project the students received a pretend "Request for Proposal" by a make-believe
company called Mobility Toys. The groups then came up with a team
name, logo, and slogan. In order to find out what their target audience
wanted them to build, the students interviewed elementary students from
C.B. Smith Elementary School. They then took the results from the
interview, and used it to build the toy.
\
At the end of the project,
the students put together an oral presentation. The presentation
was then presented to Caterpillar engineers. The oral presentation
also included a demonstration of that company's toy. Along with the
oral presentation, the companies also had to write a written proposal.
This project taught many
things in the time that it took place. It taught many people how
to work with people they did not know, or for some reason did not get along
with that person. Although, the main focus on this project was to
give students a chance to learn what it is like working in the real world:
meeting deadlines, overcoming challenges, and following through with projects.
