Miss Hallam A Wonderful and Interesting Counselor By Matt Sheehan, Katie McArdle, Cora Wiker, and Jim Laws 
 
Miss Halam on the job  Miss Candi Hallam is Edison Junior High’s counselor. We thought it would be interesting to see what kinds of things she does and the kinds of people she helps.

Q: When did you start counseling?
A: “I have been a counselor for 19 years believe it or not!”

Q: Did you start at Edison, or did you counsel or teach somewhere else first? If so where?
A: “At a high school for 6 years, 14 years here and at the grade schools, (C.B. Smith, Sunset Hills, and Starke.)

Q: What kinds of problems do you solve?
A: “Any kinds of problems ranging from depression and girlfriend/boyfriend problems to drugs, alcohol, and divorce.”

 Q: When and why did you decide to create the Edison Connection programs?
A: “Opportunity waiting to happen! The C.B. Smith teachers needed help, and the Edison students wanted to help.”

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a counselor?
A: “I like to try to make a positive difference, and I like the flexibility of the job.”

Q: Is being a counselor a fun occupation? Why or why not?
A: “I like it because it’s challenging and rewarding; I can really and truly help.”

Q: Are most of the problems severe, or are they mostly common ones?
A: “It’s just a range of problems, from little problems all the way up to severe ones.”

Q: What is the worst thing about being a counselor?
A: “ Frustration that I can’t change the families for the kids.”

Q: Do you deal with adults also?
A: “I counsel teachers, and sometimes I have parent conferences.”

Q: How many years did you go to school?
A: “ Four years for a Bachelor’s Degree, and one for Master’s Degree.”

Q: Where did you go to college?
A: “To Greenfield College and then ISU for a Master’s Degree.”

Q: How does your job affect your friends and family?
A: “Some of my friends say ‘don’t counsel me,’ and my family is proud.”

Q: Are there any laws you have to abide by to be a counselor?
A: “Yes, I have to report child abuse.”

Q: Have your clients or cases ever touched you emotionally?
A: “All of the time, oh yes, I learned not to lose sleep over them, though.”
