HAPPY VALLEY, CA.- Keri Jones, 11, was sitting
at home on her couch. Her only family member, her mom, was out shopping
for groceries. Suddenly, Keri’s back porch went up into flames; Keri screamed
for help. “ I wasn’t sure what to do,” said Keri. “I also was frightened
for my mom for I knew she would be worried about me.” After Keri’s back
porch collapsed, she was frozen in fear, because the fire was taking her
house away. “I tried to get out of the front door, but my mom had locked
it for my safety; I couldn’t move because the fire had now |
surrounded me. I thought my life was coming to an end. Thankfully, Lesley
Johnston, the firefighter who saved my life, burst in through the door!
She reached inside the door and pulled me out, and I suffered only minor
burns from the fire. My dream now is to become a female firefighter and
save lives like my hero, Lesley Johnston.”
COMMENTARY: This story shows that women can save lives too! In our story,
Lesley Johnston, the female firefighter saved Keri Jones’s life. Fires
are very important and the more firefighters the world has, the more lives
that can be saved. In this story people learn that it doesn’t matter if
they are female or male, it is just that they have saved others. We hope
everyone has learned a little more about fires and firefighters.
