By Marsha Sorenson, Craig Keyes, Brandon Haley, Amanda Smith, and Cody Russell
After fifteen years of the same plain license plate, Illinois is finally getting a new plate. It became official on Thursday September 24, 1999, when Secretary .of State, Jesse White, showed the new plate to the public. Drivers voted on the plates. Over 230,000 people voted on the new look. There were nine different styles to choose from. Most of the plates had a fading background and said “Land of Lincoln” on them.

The red letters and numbers give the license plate a nice look.  Be Lincoln peeks out from beneath the letters. It says “Land of Lincoln” on the bottom. Illinois is written in cursive letters at the top. The new design is more colorful than the old ones.
Even though we have decided on the plates this year, we will have to wait until the year 2001to use them. The plates will take a long time to distribute. All the new license plates will cost around $58,000,000 dollars. Hopefully our plate will be as good as other state’s plates.
Dave Simpson of the Pekin Daily Times said, “The plates aren’t much better than the old ones. It is useless to spend that much money on something that is not much better than what we had before.”
Virginia Stanley, a resident of Chicago, said, “The plates are good and safe because nothing grabs you so people can concentrate on driving instead of the plates.”
