The explosion occurred September 26, 1999.  It happened in downtown Celaya, Mexico. The buildings nearby had their fronts blown off. The explosion happened in back of a candy store. The candy store sold the fireworks. The explosion destroyed the building where fireworks were made and stored. It was sparked by a supply of gunpowder used for making the fireworks. The bigger explosions happened because of gas tanks. Smoke covered the area and turned everything black. Fifty-six people were killed and three hundred and forty-eight were injured. Eighty-one people were hospitalized over night. Doctors were called in from different cities as far away as one hundred and twenty miles. The explosion
occurred about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
“We don’t have any hope of finding anymore survivors. Just bodies.” said Fire Capt. Francisco Estrade. The explosion went through a busy area of shops downtown. Soldiers sealed off a large area of downtown. The streets were covered in debris and bodies. Electricity was out for most of the city.
We feel bad that this had to happen like it did. I think we could have prevented it from happening by banning fireworks because of how dangerous they are. We feel that fireworks should be illegal everywhere in the world. In our opinion if the fireworks aren’t or can’t be safe, why sall them if someone’s going to get hurt. If something like this can happen in Mexico it could happen here.
