Rules: Are They Always Fair?

During the school year, students often feel that they are not being treated fairly.  One student says, “I’ve been up on the school roof several times and I’ve only gotten warnings.   Another kid I know did the same thing and got suspended.”
Who decides how people get punished? It depends on the offense.  The Edison principal, Mr. Fitzanko, states that although the teachers, principal, and vice principal deal with all minor offenses and suspensions,
the Board of Education deals with expulsions.  He also says that each student has a file that includes notes on any unsavory behavior.  This file, however, does not go from school to school.  Once you leave one school, it does not go to the next one.
Does it depend on the teacher?  It some cases it might. Some Edison students agree that certain teachers enforce rules more strictly than others do.  We decided to get the opinion of the people in our group.
“I think that our school rules are not doing very bad with discipline. I think we should have a rule prohibiting the public from using our basketball courts. The reason I think they should do this is because they broke some of the rims off this year."                                                               -Steven
“I think teachers should enforce rules more.  It would also help if people would just behave.  If people would keep their mouth closed and just sit there quietly, people wouldn’t get in trouble. The school’s chairs would be better if people would leave their gum at home."                                 -Darren
“This school does a pretty good job trying to dish out discipline. If they all had the same rules we would be treated much more fairly. For example, some teachers allow notes while others don’t. I understand the saying “Life isn’t fair” but I believe it should be fair at school."                -Josh
“I don’t think people should complain about not being evenly punished.  If you do something that’s out of line, it’s your fault, not the teacher’s.  Sometimes you will get caught, and sometimes you won’t.  When you do get punished, it’s your fault.”                                                          -Katie
