In 2001-2002, we began a reading program with the Rotary Club. Rotary Readers came each week and worked for one-half hour with each first grade.
In 2002-2003, we expanded this program to include second grades as well. Again, the readers spend one-half hour per week in each first and second grade class. We now have twelve Rotary members volunteering to work with us.
The possibilities for their involvement with the students are widespread. The readers have read with and listened to small groups, tutored one-on-one with individuals, played word/reading games with small groups, and helped in the classroom with specific needs or projects.
The benefits from this program are numerous. The students working with these people and often receive extra help that is needed. The Rotary members are enthusiastic and attentive to the children and are able to assist the students in their learning.
