PSCC SURVEY COMMENTS
May 2000
- What do you think a positive school climate should look like at Wilson?
- Teachers sharing & working together-Helping each other out (separate kids or baby sit during field trips)-Working as a cluster-You can't force people with different temperaments & philosophies together
- With the transition & change of Facility set rules for hallway, bathroom behavior should be "set in stone"
- I don't feel the climate is that bad. At the year's end people seem to fell more stress.
- "Think I can, not I can't"
- A blending of personalities-There should be open dialogue-Personality insights offers ways that helps promote positive communication-Be concerned with others-Be responsible and do your job-Be prepared for the day-Overcome opposition-Get the job done-pull in the same direction.
- Mutual participation & exchanging of ideas, materials, etc. with clear-cut expectations for teachers and students-Administrative follow-through for offenders
- Everyone consistently reinforcing the same behavior & character guidelines-safety-respect-collaboration
- Everyone (teachers, staff, students) aware of what is expected of them in every situation. Leadership, consistency, and accountability are important.
- Clean/inviting-age should not be a factor for assignments
- Common rules & behaviors in shared areas
- Quiet halls-lots of encouragement (ex: the medals)-new student welcome committee (students could take them on a tour…)
- As a bus driver, in order to have control of the bus I know I will make some changes for next year-I will have a seating arrangement to avoid pushing and arguing, make things more orderly, less disruptions, etc.
- Consistency in the rules everyone is expected to follow-Respect for all adults (as well as fellow students)
- Teachers working cooperatively-equal mixture of students from the various feeder schools
- The school should be clean and inviting-The relationship between teachers should be one of mutual respect-Age should not be a factor in selection for special assignment.
- People working together & putting the children first -set policy written down & followed-If not followed then they should be held accountable by the administration-Also, people should not be made to work with those whose teaching styles do not match each other.
- Common language throughout the school-Respect for students, teachers, administrators,etc.-Enthusiasm from all staff.
- A clean inviting school.
- A set of guidelines that EVERYONE follows-A set of consequences that is consistent throughout the school-A clear understanding of what is expected from students & staff.
- Students having and showing respect for other students, teachers, bus drivers-anyone who is associated with school-Being kids and seeing what being a kid is all about. They want to grow up too fast!-A" do unto others as you would have others do unto you" kind of code.
- There is unification in discipline across the school. Students help generate the rules and work as a team to help each other follow them.
- A clear delineation of what is appropriate for ALL people at Wilson School.
- A school-wide agreed-upon program that includes all students & all staff.
- Staff & students-safe, cordial, friendly, cooperative, collaborative, fair, firm, focused, consistent expectations, clearly established rules, rewards, and consequences.
- What changes would you like to see in order to attain a positive school climate?
- Teachers grouped with who they want.
- Physically-some in house rules for students behavior & procedures in the hallway & bathroom-Standardized for all teachers & students
- ARA needs to hire more custodial help to keep the building clean
- Staff should treat each other with respect & follow instructions.
- Be task oriented-outgoing-people oriented-working together we can do it-Be appreciative-be conscientious and consistent
- All-out participation on committees(not just chosen few)-Respect for each other-Clear-cut parameters
- Unity-too many policies are inconsistent throughout the building. There is nothing bringing everyone together as a team
- The whole school should have a common language in the classrooms, halls, gym, lunch, recess…
- No gum-building wide structured, consistent behavior plan
- Mannerly behavior by students and teachers
- Perhaps rules similar to the "I care rules" being used across the building with teachers adding a few specifics(ex: raise your hand)
- Three strikes your out! IF everyone knows what the rules are before the game begins saves a lot of headaches-I'm an ASA umpire I know you must have rules-1. Documented verbal warning 2. Written warning 3. Suspension off the bus for (two weeks?) If child knows & parents know ahead would help.
- Every adult should be responsible for making sure rules are consistently followed(not just watching your own class)
- A better mixture of students in all clusters
- I would like to see a consistent behavior/discipline plan-everyone should participate in discipline in the halls-I would like to see time for teachers to work together on plans
- Direction from administration-consistency in dealing with children-follow through
- Consistency among all staff regarding policies and procedures-Time taken to model desired behaviors
- Time taken to teach manners, courtesy, etc.-Reward system for individuals or classes which voluntarily do things for the good of others or the school
- A more structured consistent discipline plan to control unruly children. No gum policy-No writing instruments when students pass to bathroom. Teachers accompanied students when passing through the hallways-all teachers should be standing by their doors when children enter the building and leave the building
- Some type of code set at beginning of year-a way to acknowledge great behavior-More accountability
- Uniform following of the general bus rules-Example: sit on rear end on seats, no standing unless you are entering or exiting the bus-All rules should apply to all buses this helps with field trips-so that the students know what rules apply anytime they ride a school bus.
- A week of reinforcement of our school rules at the beginning of the year. Maybe more school goals such as the walking club but with frequent pep booster meetings(once a month)
- What are the specific problem areas and needs you would like addressed?
- Walk in the halls quietly-no running -Do not discipline a student in front of other people
- Make
people pull their weight on committees-You may need facilitators or principals that give them jobs to do to make them become involved-Principal need to make sure policies(contract) are enforced(flex, free time, special time)
- Problems on the playground that are brought back into the classroom that should be handled by supervisors at the scene not the teacher after the fact.
- Cleanliness
- I have no suggestions but we somehow need to put a stop to the increasing disrespectful attitude I have seen form students towards teachers. I haven't been on the receiving end but I have heard & seen plenty first hand. I don't think it should be tolerated since it seems to be creating a negative ripple effect. We can be empathetic to student problems and still be intolerant of disrespect. We need routine consequences.
- Communication
/time to discuss and share-Common Language/for all so there is understanding-Leadership/to be the or give a foundation to the new school climate
- Staff consistency-expectations for all students & staff-emphasis on how good we have it, not the negative
- Noise-both in the hallways and classrooms-inconsistent expectation of students-staff members who do not honor their assigned duties.-Students left alone with out adult supervision-students lack of respect for themselves, peers, and adults
- When a child is being disciplined it should be done in private between teacher/students-Try to keep staff informed
- Some pull more weight than others, but are still paid the same-Establish administrative ways to deal with those not accountable
- School wide consequences-recess behavior problems-hallway conduct-language(mean/negative-Positive)
- I would like to see all teachers be held accountable for attaining a positive school climate. Morale is low and students are becoming more of a challenge. It is time for strong leadership and change!
- All teachers need to use same grading scale-teachers should have time to work in classrooms on some institute days-all people should wear ID cards in the building
- Behavior in common areas (halls, etc.) and "very" different expectations by staff.-Responsibility by "all" for behavior.-Support(direct) by administration with chronic offenders who choose not to follow the building plan. (offenders are students & teachers)
- It has become a problem and I should have been turning manes in I guess-but the pushing and shoving getting on the buses. I thought it was much better when the kids had to walk to the buses. I always learned more from the teacher that had discipline and control of the classroom. Then I did with the one that tried to be buddies and everyone did as they pleased
- Hats only on special days-otherwise off in the building-Gum and candy only on special occasion in class or during lunch room hour-Adults need not be students' "best buddies"-Don they really need a 40 year old best friend?
- Opportunities being offered to all teachers equally-not allowing teachers requests for students expect in special cases.
- Everyone needs to be in the halls before and after school. Do not leave outside doors propped open early before children come in. Everyone needs personal identification when they are in the building. The learning center need to open one week after school opens and close one week before the end. The learning center needs to provide additional services i.e., keyboarding skills. Learning Center services have been steadily deteriorating and need to be returned to the previous level. Apparent lack of trust of teachers.
- Leadership seeing that school policy is followed-we know there's always an occasional emergency that may come up-What I'd like to see addressed is the chronic rule breakers-that should come form administration-teachers should not be responsible for that -if teachers don't follow policy-how can we expect children to follow it.
- Transition Time-Cooperation between students and also staff-student and staff attitudes
- Identification cards for everyone's for security-Relationships between teachers should be very respectful
- Hallway, recess, lunchroom behavior
- Teachers should maintain discipline on buses (fieldtrips) just as they do in class. They should be aware of bus rules the same as classroom rules & help enforce them on the school bus.
