WHAT IS IT?

A pictorial representation of the cause-and-effect relationships among the elements of a problem or issue.

WHEN IS IT USED?

  1. Do the aspects of a complex issue need to be analyzed and understood?
  2. Is the team having trouble not getting to the root causes of a problem because only symptoms seem to be apparent?

 

HOW IS IT MADE?

  1. Clearly define the issue or problem.
  2. Construct the diagram layout.
  3. Analyze the relationships.
  4. Count the arrows in/out and record.
  5. Identify the root causes and effects.
  6. Study the final diagram.
