Wilson Intermediate School
2004 — 2005
PDSA Plan

Improvement Goal 1
Improvement Focus/Goal Statement
During the 2004-2005 school year, Wilson will be expanding on the literacy block that was piloted in the 5th grade last year. All teams will be using literacy block scheduling to assist in the delivering of reading instruction.· Implement a literacy block schedule for all grades to help Wilson utilize Title, special education and Connection specialists for reading instruction· Continue staff development activities that support literacy blocks· Continue staff development activities that support furthering staff knowledge related to reading instruction· Implement the STARS and CARS reading program school-wide to aid reading instruction· Analyze pre-edperformance data to plan instruction and compare post-edperformance data to determine reading growth
Rationale of Need
Over the past four years (2000-2004) Wilson School has shown little improvement in our reading ISAT scores.
Alignment to District Goals
Goal 1: Continuously improve student and employee performance

Improvement Goal 2

Improvement Focus/Goal Statement
After piloting some new math ideas during the 2003-2004 school year, the math study group is ready to expand ideas school-wide. Teachers will administer three word problem assessments three times a year. The assessments will be used to help with instruction and prepare students for state testing. Staff will learn more about using a rubric when evaluating extended responses.
Rationale of Need
During the past three years (2001-2004) the ISAT math scores have been inconsistent. There has been no positive trend in the scores
Alignment to District Goals
Goal 1: Continuously improve student and employee performance

Improvement Goal 3

Improvement Focus/Goal Statement
To provide a safe, secure learning environment for all stakeholders

Rationale of Need
Year-end comparison (2002-2003 and 2003-2004) compiled from monthly incident reports, specifically…

  • The 2002-2003 4th graders had 104 incidents. This same group (as 5th graders in 2003-2004) had 216 incidents… a 108% increase.
  • The 2002-2003 5th graders had 166 incidents. This same group (as 6th graders in 2003-2004) had 407 incidents… a 145% increase.
  • These facts beg the question: Is there something that needs to change within the system?·

We are also examining behavior incidents of IEP students (because they did not meet AYP), and found that…

  • In 2003-2004, 47% of the 4th grade incidents were by IEP students; however… half of these were by 1 student.
  • In 2002-2003, 15% of our 4th graders had an IEP. They were involved in 14% of the 4th grade incidents. In 2003-2004 (as 5th graders) this same group increased slightly to 19% of 5th grade incidents.
  • In 2002-2003, 24% of our 5th graders had an IEP. They were involved in 16% of the 5th grade incidents. In 2003-2004 (as 6th graders) this same group was involved in 30% of 6th grade incidents.·

We feel that improving the learning environment at Wilson is a school-wide issue.

  • In 2002-2003, 80% of the incidents were by non-IEP students. In 2003-2004, 70% of the incidents were by non-IEP students.·

We will also continue to examine gender sub groups, based on the following information:

  • In 2002-2003, boys were involved in 88 of our incidents. In 2003-2004, boys were involved in 80% of the incidents.
