Our
supervision PDSA began as a result of feedback from parents,
students and staff concerning the quality of supervision of
students during recess and lunch. We began by identifying
for supervisors what were acceptable and unacceptable activities
for students. We supported the traing activities of our contracted
service (ARA) and implemented a system to collect information
about how many misbehaviors were exhibited by each class.
In November
our number of misbehaviors was not decreasing despite some
rather creative efforts from our teachers. At a staff meeting
teachers identified the need to know which children were misbehaving
so that they would not waste valuable class time with the
students who were behaving. At that time we implemented a
data collection syste which identified which students were
misbehaving and what misbehaviors they were exhibiting. Again,
our misbehaviors did not decrease signifigantly over time.
In January
staff felt that it was repeat offenders that were the problem.
We developed and implemented a new collection tool to track
how often students were misbehaving. We targeted those students
who exhibited 10 misbehaviors in an 8 week period or who had
misbehaviors in 5 out of 8 weeks. Those targeted students
were removed from their class's lunch table and lunch recess
and placed in a training program run by our counselor.
