Our
Title 1 PDSA began as a result of frustration over achievement
in reading and assessments that were not giving us meaningful
information. We investigated two approaches that we felt were
important to reading achievement--fluency and comprehension.
Through our search for resources we found fluency resources
from "Read Naturally." Using these resources we
assess fluency for our second and third graders on a monthly
basis. We had done some piloting of comprehension materials
from "Curriculum Associates. We began administering the
CARS in October and by our SIP day in January had enough data
points to do an analysis of student performance.
In
addition to the software from the company, we developed an
Excel spreadsheet to identify which students were in need
of instruction on which sub-skills. We are continuing to adminster
the CARS assessment on a monthly basis and will have 5 more
data points by the end of May.
Our
fluency scores have steadily increased throughout the year
with few exceptions. Our information tells us that if a child
has a median score of 80 correct words per minute out of 3
consecutive scores then we should move them up a grade level
in fluency assessment. We have determined that if a student
demonstrates the same level of mastery at the grade level
above their placement, then we no longer need to be concerned
with fluency assessment.
