| Teaching and learning improve
in a safe, respectful and inviting environment.
This learning environment
is characterized by a well-maintained facility in which students, staff,
parents and the community feel safe and secure. The learning environment
nurtures each student’s unique needs and abilities. Learners are actively
engaged in purposeful, motivating experiences. Each individual is treated
with dignity and respect.
Clear expectations for behavior
are established and consequences are administered fairly. Continuous growth
is encouraged through meaningful feedback and self-reflection.
The learning community includes,
but is not limited to: a visually stimulating atmosphere which displays
children’s accomplishments, an optimal physical arrangement which allows
for flexible instructional opportunities and student access to varied materials,
an environment that is organized and managed by students with the teacher(s)
as facilitator(s), an environment where student expectations have been
communicated with clarity and dignity, and consistent opportunities for
engaged learning that include all ability levels, student choice, student
reflection and conflict management.
