Learning Community 2000 Grant
Electronic Town Center

Our Goal(s): Develop a community web presence to serve as a "Town Center" for the learning community. Populate it with a variety of community resources, including access to all schools, city government, library, health and social services, news, parks, business, and other interest groups.

Our Result(s):

Pekin.net WebSite
This website was developed to give the community of Pekin a presence on the web. District 108 trained several volunteers from the community in website development, and each volunteer was responsible for a specific content area of the website. Since then, the site has grown to provide a large collection of resources that all community members can use. The community website is now in the process of being turned over to the Pekin Chamber of Commerce for further development of the content areas.

SABID
The ultimate goal of SABID is to make Pekin a better place on-line by helping organizations in the Pekin area develop high quality web sites. LC2000 staff organized, trained, and supervised SABID's high school students who performed one or more of the following services: develop a first-time web site, update and remodel an existing site, perform a site audit, and/or train organizational staff to maintain a web site. Organizations received the service free of charge. Students were paid $6.00 per hour from LC2000 grant funds.

Student Tech Clubs
District 108 established after school tech clubs that enhanced students web publishing skills.

School Webmasters
In each school, LC2000 identifies and pays one teacher to act as the Webmaster. The Webmaster is responsible for creating and maintaining the school's homepage within Pekin.net, training other teachers to use IBM's "Learning Village" homepage software to create and maintain a classroom homepage, and sponsoring a Student Webmaster Club. School Webmasters receive extensive training, including theory and practice of Web design, Web-based marketing, HTML, Adobe Photoshop, and various graphics tools.
