Flower Mound was inhabited by Indians of the Wichita tribe until 1846.    In 1841 an investor from Louisville, Kentucky formed the first and largest
empresario to bring settlers to the Republic of Texas.  The settlers discovered blackland prairie filled with blue stem grasses and an abundance
of wildflowers.  The prominence of the 12 1/2 acre, 50 foot high "mound" has been an identifying feature of the community from the beginning.  Historians
speculate that the mound was a sacred ceremonial ground of the Indians.  Flower Mound was an agricultural community and therefore there was no need
for a town center.  There were no merchants, lawyers, bankers, etc.  Most of its citizens were engaged in farming and attended one of the two churches in
the area.
