SPELLING BEE

FEBRUARY 15, 2008

HOSTED BY:

BROADMOOR JR. HIGH

Every year Broadmoor Junior High has a spelling bee for students in grades seven and eight. It's usually held after the winter holidays and it is always a very exciting event! Since the first week of school, our students have been preparing for this event. The various classes practice hundreds of words and conduct in-class practice spelling bees. Not too long ago, an official in-class contest produced a winner and an alternate from each class. These students will compete in the school spelling bee which will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008.   The winner and the first runner up will advance to the District 108 Spelling Bee which will be held at Broadmoor Junior High School on Friday, February 15, 2008.

While our school doesn't place a lot of emphasis on competition within the classroom, we realize that events such as this are beneficial to our students in several ways including:

  • Recognizes academic abilities as opposed to physical or musical abilities;
  • Gives experience with being up in front of a crowd in somewhat of a pressure situation;
  • Rewards self-discipline and hard work;
  • Teaches gracefulness in both winning and losing;
  • Builds self-esteem;
  • Gives families a chance to cheer and show support for their students;
  • Last, but not least, improves spelling abilities!
