| Why
a Lighthouse? |
| As
Washington School continues in its efforts to build
a learning community based upon mutual respect for
others, we will focus this year's school-wide theme
on the relevance of developing leadership skills
through the practiced art of communication.
Our
theme story conveys the importance of keeping
an open mind with others and setting aside our
personal demands in order to better understand
different perspectives in life.
By
way of meaningful interactions, we begin to develop
a mutual respect for the uniqueness of others.
Through shared, worthwhile communications we CAN
light the way in making a difference!

Story
YOUR LIGHT can make a difference!
A
proud officer in the navy had dreamed from childhood
of commanding a great battleship one day. He finally
achieved his dream and was given commission of
the newest and proudest ship in the fleet.
One
stormy night, the captain was on duty on the bridge
when he spotted a strange light rapidly closing
in upon his vessel. As the ship plowed through
the giant waves, the glimmer of the light rose
and fell just above the horizon of the sea. The
mighty captain ordered his signalman to flash
a message to the unidentified craft on his port
side, "Alter your course ten degrees to the
south immediaely!"
Within
seconds came a reply, "Please alter your
course ten degrees to the north." Determined
that his ship would never take a backseat to any
other, the captain snapped back a second order,
"Alter your course ten degrees - I am the
CAPTAIN!"
The
response was beamed back, "Please, Captain,
trust me - alter your course ten degrees to the
north. I am Seaman Third Class Smith." By
this time, the light was growing ever brighter
and larger on the horizon.
Infuriated,
the captain grabbed the signal light himself and
personally signaled, "ALTER YOUR COURSE -
I AM A BATTTLESHIP!!!"
And
in return came the final reply, "Please,
sir, alter your course...I am a lighthouse."

Starfish
Theme
A friend of ours was walking down a deserted beach
at sunset, when he spied another man in the distance
who kept leaning down, picking up something and
hurling it out into the water. Our friend was puzzled.
He approached the young man and asked what he was
doing.
"I'm
throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You
see, it's low tide right now and all of these
starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If
I don't throw them into the sea, they'll die up
here from lack of oxygen."
"I
understand," replied the friend, "but
there must be thousands of starfish on this beach.
You can't possibly get to all of them. Can't you
see that you can't possibly make a difference?"
The
local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet
another starfish, and as he threw it back into
the sea, he replied, "Made a difference to
that one!"
