What do we hope to become?  Vision gives direction to the organization.  It helps establish an agenda for action.  It establishes gaps between where the organization is and where the organization wants to be.

Rubric
Entry: Staff members have not yet been involved in describing future conditions for their school.
Beginning: Staff members have developed a vision statement to describe future conditions for their school, but most members are unaware or affected by it.
Developing: Staff members have worked together to describe the school they are trying to create.  They have endorsed the description and feel a sense of ownership in it.  School improvement planning and staff development initiatives are driven by the shared vision.
Sustaining: Staff members routinely describe the major principles of the shared vision and use it to guide their day-to-day efforts and decisions. The vision is evident to new staff members and those outside of the school.

Key Questions for Reflection

  • What do we hope to become?
  • What are the characteristics of an excellent school?
  • What criteria should we use in assessing the effectiveness of our school?
  • In what way would you like our school to be significantly different five years from now than it is today?
  • What have we accomplished in the last five years that we can be proud of? What can we accomplish in the next five years that would make us proud?
  • Is the vision shared among all stakeholders?
  • Is the vision credible? Does it focus on essential?
  • Is the vision research based?
  • Can the vision be used as a blueprint for improvement?
  • Can we use the vision to identify gaps between where we are and where we want to be?
