Washington Chorus
The Washington School chorus performed for C.
B. Smith students on May 14th. Many former Smith students were among
the singers, and some had siblings in the audience.

Bus Evacuation
Practice
All C. B. Smith students practiced bus evacuation
procedures on May 10th. Each spring students learn what to do in
the event of an emergency while they are riding a school bus.

Visiting Grandparents
Parents, grandparents, and great grandparents
visited their 1st graders on April 29th and 30th. Together they
enjoyed songs, games, crafts, and lunch.

Goodbye & Good Luck
The C. B. Smith staff wished the spring interns
good luck as they finished their last days of student teaching.
They will graduate from college in May. The staff and students will
miss them!

Celebration
In a ceremony on April 28th, Miss Hallam,
who coordinated the Smith playground painting project, and C. B.
Smith students thanked the Edison students and teachers who painted.

Playground Magic
On April 26th, Edison Jr. High students painted
the C. B. Smith playground with paints and designs provided by the
Smith PTA. A map of the United States and various games are among
the colorful displays.

Baby Chicks
Baby chicks, a sure sign of spring, are hatching
in the kindergarten rooms. Eggs have been incubating for the last
twenty-one days, and the children are excited to watch the chicks
finally hatch!

Fun Friday
C. B. Smith students danced to music played by
disc jockey, Mitchell Filarski, during lunch hour on March 26th.

Students from the Illinois Central College Reader's
Theater performed for C. B. Smith students on March 26th. Their skits
and songs were about quirks in the English language.

High School Buddies
PCHS students from Mrs. Kahl's Psychology classes wrote
stories that students from Mrs. Durr's, Mrs. Ranney's, and Mrs. White's
classes illustrated. The high school students visited with Smith students
on March 25th to tell stories and play games. |

PEAK Spanish Fiesta
Check out the pictures
from the PEAK Spanish Fiesta held on March 23rd! Participants
won door prizes, took turns trying to break the pinata, dressed
up in authentic clothes, and ate lots of Mexican food. Everyone
had a great time!

A group of Mrs. Muren's students did a choral
reading from Dr. Seuss' Cat In the Hat.

Songs of the West
Mr. Wade Hall visited with some third grade
reading students on February 20th. As part of their unit on the
Western Movement, Mr. Hall sang songs and told stories about his
travels in the West.

Shelters
Mr. Wiegardt's third grade students created
many kinds of shelters as part of a literacy unit based on "Hatchet"
by Gary Paulsen.

Guest Reader
Retired teacher, Betty Boehm, read a book about
the life of Dr. Martin Luther King to third grade students. The
book was donated by the Pekin Coalition for Equality.

learning center took advantage of the fresh snow outside by making
and eating snow ice cream!

PEAK Performance!
Children participating in the afterschool PEAK
program (Pekin Educational Academy for Kids) put on a play based
on the book "Where The Wild Things Are." Family and latchkey
children were invited to watch the performance. Here are more pictures.

| Tammy Helm, sign language interpreter, and Nick Ziemer,
Communications Director for Central Illinois Center for Independent
Living, talked to a group of third grade students. Nick, who has been
deaf since birth, signed stories for the children and taught them
some signs, while Tammy intepreted. |

Fruit Frenzy!
Mrs. Bellrose showed students a coconut before
cracking it open. Students sampled the milk and meat as well as
tasting other less familiar fruits and vegetables. Activities were
centered around a story the students were reading.

Students returning to school after winter
break battled below zero windchills! Mittens, hats and scarves were
a necessity as students hustled to and from the building. Cold weather
kept everyone indoors during recess.

On the last afternoon before winter break,
all students met in the gym for an all-school sing led by Mrs. Wormer.

article about Captain Bobby Sidell, while he looks on. Captain Sidell,
an Army psychologist and former C. B. Smith student, will be taking
letters that Smith students wrote to servicemen in Iraq. |

Coloring Contest
Third grader, Nichole Miller, won the coloring
contest sponsored by the third grade SOS. In addition to having
her artwork displayed on the school webpage, Nichole received a
prize.

Mrs. Conway!
Staff members surprised C. B. Smith secretary,
Mrs. Conway, on her birthday with a cake, cards, and gifts. Her
birthday is on December 14th.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences were held on November
20th and 21st.
|

| The C. B. Smith PTA held a special meeting, including
a pizza dinner on Nov. 18th. Following the meeting, PTA President,
Diana Barton, introduced teachers Mrs. Lucera and Mrs. Muren, who
presented a program on helping children become successful readers.
Children's books were given to all families attending. |

Veterans' Day

| Mrs. Ranney, dressed in U. S. Army
fatigues, reads about the meaning of Veterans' Day to her first grade
students. Sgt. Matt Traver, an Air Force recruiter, spoke to first
graders about the military. |

On Halloween, C. B. Smith students paraded in costume around
the block. They then returned to their classrooms for Halloween
parties.

Bus Evacuation Drill
Greg Ranney, Superintendent of
Public Properties, looks on as students practice safely evacuating
a bus . All grade levels participated in the drill on October 7th.

Fire Station Visit
C. B. Smith first graders visited the 14th Street
Fire Station on October 2nd. The firemen showed them the firemen's
special gear and some of their emergency procedures. More

Sommer Park
First Grade students went on a field trip to
Sommer Park on Sept. 25th. They rode on a hackrack ride, fished,
hiked, played games and had a picnic lunch.

Appleseed for students in honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday on
September 26th.

Chromatography
Third grade students in Mrs.White's class conducted
chromatography experiments to discover other colors hidden within
the color black. This activity was part of a literacy unit based
on the book, The Black Snowman.

The Peoria Symphony Guild presented a puppet play for students on
Sept. 30th.

Apple Orchard Visit
Kindergarten students visited an apple orchard
on Sept. 15th in Metamora. The students learned about apples and
grapes, played on the playground, listened to a story, and picked
their own apples.

Day of School
Mr. Schroff, Principal at C. B. Smith, welcomes bus
students on their first day of school. New superintendent, Mr. Don
White, and Smith staff members were also on the playground to greet
students. Everyone is looking forward to a great year!

Mr. A. J. Schroff. He was the Assistant Principal for Broadmoor Jr.
High last year and is looking forward to joining the staff at C. B.
Smith. Former principal, Dr. Cindy Worner, has moved to a new postion
at the 108 district offices. |
