Police In Schools Program -
A.J. said that the school police program started in the junior highs.
At a recent principals' meeting, principals from other building
expressed interest in having similar programs in their buildings.
He asked SILT members how they would like to use a police officer
on a regular basis. Suggestions included programs on pedestrian
safety, bike safety, drug awareness, stranger danger, using 911,
bullying, and just having the officer in the building to develop
a positive attitude about the police department. Diana Barton has
been talking to Officer Bitner about coming to the spring festival
to set up a booth for child safety.
Communicating with Parents on Sensitive Matters
Diana Barton discussed trying to communicate with parents about
issues concerning contributing money for teacher gifts without teachers
being uncomfortable. She would like to send some information home
and asked for ways to leave teachers out of the loop so that teachers
will not feel uncomfortable. Members suggested putting information
in the Smith newsletter. Teachers do not want parents to think that
there is any expectation for gifts. Diana also asked if we could
have a student directory so that parents or students could communicate
with each other. Participation would be strictly optional. Security
and privacy issue concerns were discussed.
Social Studies and Science Money
A.J. asked that each grade level turn in an estimate to him
by January 30th for social study and science supplies. He would
like the information to be put on a simple table listing the items
and the costs. Members discussed possible solutions for the lack
of needed wall space in classrooms. Jan talked about designing some
type of sliding displays that could be interchanged. Diana said
that she would try making a model of such a display.
Supervision
A.J. handed out a radar diagram regarding supervision. He asked
each SILT member to complete the radar before leaving the meeting.
