SILT Minutes - March 19, 2003

Cindy discussed the furniture order that was e-mailed to staff this week. Only those teachers wanting new furniture need to respond.

PTA is looking at playground equipment for an additional playground at
C. B. Smith. This playground will replace the small kindergarten playground in front of the school. (The equipment in this playground is old and not up to the safety standards of the equipment currently available.) PTA needs to know where we would put this new playground, since the cost varies with the location (grass or blacktop). Cindy discussed supervision logistics and problems. We would need adequate supervision, and we would like to have the playground as far from the street as possible. A fenced area would be best. Jan suggested putting a playground in back of the gym. The front of the building would not be the best location because of the close proximity to the classrooms. Mrs. Barton is in the process of securing funds for such a playground and it appears that all money will come from donations. SILT members agreed to a location somewhere on the blacktop, preferably away from the classroom windows.

Cindy talked about the grade level meeting pilot program that is taking place each Monday this month. So far, everything has gone pretty well. Teachers need to remember to make sure that specialists are in their rooms before teachers leave their students at the door. Cindy said that we will need to have a committee to begin planning next year's schedule for grade level meetings. Lucy and Jill need to come on Tuesdays or Thursdays, so Cindy will discuss this with Mike Muren. Becky, Jan, and Gloria volunteered to help plan a schedule. Cindy will talk to Mike first.

With regard to the PE schedule proposed by Lucy last month, SILT members said that their constituents felt that the 20 minute time slot would not work well with their other schedules and was not long enough for the children. Jan said that staff members appreciated the work that Lucy went to in making this plan, even though the majority preferred 30-minute time slots.

Jan discussed the parent-teacher evaluation conference feedback forms. Many student writing improvements were noted by parents. SILT members were pleased that the comments were very positive.

Class lists were discussed. Teachers expressed an interest in sharing the lists with previous grade levels.
